Elliot Bryant - The Art Loft - Sculpture Class

Do you have an interest in making sculptures but don’t know where to begin? Or just want to learn a new medium? In this series class, you will learn the very forgiving medium of foam carving; an affordable lightweight material that can be sculpted on its own or combined with other materials to make a wide range of forms.

In this 3 week class, we will cover material preparation and the designing process, reductive carving and additive techniques, and different surface treatments for finishing your sculptures. I will be able to help with project idea development in class but you are strongly encouraged to bring multiple ideas for projects to the first class. If possible bring with you photographs, drawings and/or objects to reference, it will make sculpting your project a lot easier.Sculptures can be as intensive as you desire but I highly encourage students to work on their projects outside of class, at least for more ambitious projects. The primary tools you will need to work at home can be purchased from Home Depot for around $20 and you may already own some. Foam, tools and a weather resistant coating suitable for outdoor sculptures will be provided for class use. I recommend you wear clothing you wouldn’t mind getting messy and to bring any of the following tools if you own them: rasps, surform tools and utility knives (the extendable ones are really useful).
