Angela Anderson to Show at The Art Loft

We are pleased to announce our gallery opening on July 7th, from 5-8 pm featuring the work of  Angela Anderson entitled ‘Le Pont Neuf, The New Bridge, #9.’

Anglea’s classes at the Art Loft are extremely popular and it’s easy to see why. Her expressionist style is immediately eye catching and draws you right in. We thoroughly enjoyed a visit to her home and studio last year. Angela’s large scale works are so impressive and engaging. We are so happy to have her as an instructor and are honored to have her show with us.

Angela Anderson makes paintings in her studios in Maine and Florida. A trained figurative artist with a BFA in Fine Arts, from UNH. Angela is very prolific, working on several series of paintings simultaneously. Narrative paintings of the circus and tents, WW1 subjects, portraits, Florida paintings of palm trees, beach scenes and figures. Inspired to return to an earlier series of Romantic paintings, based on 18th-century French paintings, an exhibit of Romance was shown at the Port Clyde Art Gallery in 2016.

Having had exhibited widely in NYC and Europe, with a solo exhibition in Munich, Germany. Angela's work was included in Martin Kippenberger’s shows at Museum of Modern Art Paris, Cassel, Germany, Museum Beuyman’s von Beuningen, in Rotterdam Holland, and Metro Pictures Gallery, NY, NY. Her video Love, Boys and Food was shown at the New Museum in New York City, and the Queens Museum, Queens, NY. A resident of NY, NY, she worked for artist Philip Pearlstein as a model, while making her own work and exhibiting there.

Le Pont Neuf, The New Bridge, #9 – Gallery Show at The Art Loft – July 7- August 28, 2017

In Toulouse, France, Le Pont Neuf, built in 1544, was strikingly wide for it’s time.  But it was the reflections it makes that captured painter Angela Anderson’s fancy.  The archways become full circles reflecting sunlight or electrical lights mounted on tall poles along the bridge’s walkways.

Between the numerous archways, large circular openings allow overflow to pass through, making more pattern, structure, and shapes.

Angela made her first trip in April to Toulouse and fell in love with the bridge while painting in the streets of Toulouse, (Frances’ most Hispanic and 5th largest city).  She will be showing the bridge series, including 3 paintings done in France.

The focus has become a full show of paintings and drawings of the bridge, on a larger scale than Lufthansa’s overhead compartment could contain.  All on view during First Friday’s Art Walk in July will be drawings, oil paintings, grisaille studies and palette knife paintings, techniques Anderson believes in as an art teacher.

Fine Art Summer Workshops in Midcoast Maine

The Art Loft will host several well-known artists to their summer workshops program this year. We are thrilled to welcome Suzanne Siegel from Guilford, Connecticut, Carloyn Garrett Hardy from Williamsburg, Virginia and Art Paine from Bernard, Maine.

Suzanne Siegel will be sharing her acrylics and mixed media collage process in a 3-day workshop from July 8-10th. Students will learn through guided exercises and explore intuitive and experimental abstract painting, including collage, transfer, and monoprinting methods. Mixed media includes acrylic paints, graphite, pastels, crayons, markers, lightweight fabrics, personal papers scanned onto archival paper.

Suzanne is currently represented by Carver Hill Gallery in Rockland, Maine, Cynthia Winings Gallery in Blue Hill, Maine, Cove Gallery in Wellfleet, MA, and Archipelago – The Island Institute in Rockland, Maine. Caroline Garrett Hardy has been an artist all her life, earning an MFA in printmaking from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and a second Masters degree in book arts from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Her BFA was from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, in painting and printmaking.  She uses paper fragments, typically gathered on trips, to create collage works. These fragments might be from brochures, ticket stubs, napkins, maps, or other tourist material on paper. Caroline used a lot of these fragments, some collected in Spain in 2010, to create several works commemorating different cities there.

Caroline Hardy travels to Maine to teach a two-day representational collage workshop. She will share her process using this fascinating medium to create a portrait of your loved one, your pet, or perhaps even your boat. Participants will begin with an exercise using newspaper to see shapes and gradations from white, grays, and blacks and how to apply this to a representational figure. Afterward, you will be using an image of your chosen subject to create a work of art in color. Methods of adhering paper in an archival manner will be taught along with color theory, texture, and design.

You can find Caroline at http://www.carolineghardy.com

What Makes the Art Loft Special

There are many different options out there when it comes to taking art classes. They range from very informal community education lessons right up to high-level courses at art schools. It can be overwhelming and intimidating to know where you will best fit in. Many individuals struggle with wondering if they are good enough to take particular classes. Some find the financial or time commitment required to take a class difficult.

The Art Loft

At The Art Loft, we offer solutions to your concerns. Our desire is to create a warm, friendly, welcoming environment where everybody feels comfortable, whatever their skill level or economic background.  And we feel we have done just that.

We are growing a community of people that love to explore their creative side with other like-minded individuals. If you enjoy being around friendly people, having fun, and learning together, The Art Loft is your place.

And on top of the welcoming atmosphere, a very big bonus to taking classes at The Art Loft is the level of commitment. We make it so easy for you! We provide you with all the supplies you need. This is a huge benefit for the student. Why buy 10 tubes of expensive paint and new brushes if you only want to explore painting and give it a try. Come and experiment for several weeks before you invest in supplies of your own?

In addition to not having to buy art supplies, you also don’t have to commit to the high cost of a 6 or 8-week class. Our ‘series’ classes run 3 weeks long and are only $45. If you find you love the medium, you can continue with another 3 weeks. We also have many workshops available that run from 2-4 hours and are just $25-$45.

Care is also taken to find instructors that have the students interests at heart, are patient and kind and are familiar with teaching beginners.

Now is a great time to start your creative journey! Check out our schedule and see what interests you most.

Have you taken a class at The Art Loft yet? If so, was there something special you enjoyed?

Gettin’ Down and Dirty

Art Party’s at the Art Loft have been a welcome respite from the cold, dark, Maine winters.  Each month we offered a free class to the public to encourage creative growth in the community.

Last Saturday we introduced sculpture artist Elliot Bryant with a plaster casting class. We encouraged everyone to come in their play clothes and plan on getting dirty. And we did … get dirty that is! There is something about digging in the dirt, only this time it was gettin’ down with clay, just so much fun!!

Elliot is a fabulous instructor, kids and parents alike had a great time … as you can see …

Partying at the Art Loft

Jewelry Making Art Party at the Art Loft

Our first Art Party was a huge success! We had a wonderful turnout and everyone had a relaxing afternoon making jewelry and making friends.

Karen Olson brought her bead stash to share and each person went home with a few pairs of earring to wear or give as gifts. Karen promised she would do another free class in the early spring! We can’t wait!!

But if you can’t wait until spring, she will be teaching a class in metalwork in January. Click here to sign up.

There will be a free art party at the Art Loft every month, each with a different instructor and theme. In January, it will be Melissa Kelly with ‘Reviving Creativity.’ Check it out here.

See you there!

Abstracts and Realism at the Art Loft

When it comes to art, which do you love? Abstracts or realism?

Opinion seems to be split right down the middle, so that’s what we’ve done. Split the Art Loft right down the middle with a two person show featuring Chuck Paine and Paula Apro.

Chuck Paine is both a yacht  builder and accomplished artist, proficient in oil and watercolor. You can see a love of both professions in his artwork. A passion for all that is Maine, especially the sea, is clearly evident. Students at the Art Loft benefit greatly from the traditional art instruction he offers. It is such a pleasure to have Chuck as part of our instructor team. We are so pleased to be offering his work at the Festival of Lights Art Walk opening on November 25th, from 2-8, Black Friday. Small pen and ink drawings, as well as large oil paintings, will be available to purchase.

Chuck will be on hand to explain his process. Please feel free to stop by and talk shop with him.

Paula Apro is an artist and photographer as well as a  web designer. She is a co-founder of the Art Loft. Paula’s photography workshops are well known in Maine and have a loyal following. She has a passion for abstracts and has developed a process by which she manipulates her camera settings and creates motion in her work. The result is an amazing image beautifully printed and perfect for any home. You simply must experience her photography in person, truly inspiring!

Stop by and say hi to Paula Friday, she will be happy to share her story with you!

Encaustic art with Otty Merrill

Encaustic art with Otty Merrill

On Saturday, November 5th, Otty Merrill demonstrated her encaustic art process to a group at The Art Loft. We thoroughly enjoyed watching her create with this amazing medium! Encaustic art is a process by which elements are embedded in wax. One can also ‘paint’ elements with colored wax onto a board. The possibilities are endless with this ancient artistic medium.

Otty Merrill
My statement as an artist is this:

“You might as well ask a fish to make a statement about “water”…it’s that much a part of who I am and what I do and how I see the world. I’m thrilled and thankful for having been born with an artist’s eye and heart. Temperament?…not so sure.

But this is for sure: life keeps getting better and so does my art, I notice, so long as I don’t take it too seriously or try to be something I am not.

What do YOU see in my artwork? If it is joy, or mystery, a pull or a connection, I have succeeded.”

~ Otty Merrill

Giggles and Doodles Kids Art Class - The Art Loft

We don’t know how she does it, but each week Kim comes up with an amazing project for her 3-6-year-old class, Giggles and Doodles Kids Art Class. Whether painting with cars and fly swatters, making paper mache fall trees, spray painting with acrylics in spray bottles, or becoming human spirographs, Kim never ceases to amaze us with her ability to design creative classes for the kids. She even provides her own handmade smocks for the children to wear!
