Suzanne Siegel - The Art Loft

Experiment & Improvise: Acrylics and Mixed Media Collage Painting

Suzanne Siegel travels from Guilford, Connecticut to share her expertise and knowledge in acrylics and mixed media painting. Suzanne’s is represented here in Rockland by Carver Hill Gallery and Cynthia Winings Gallery in Blue Hill, Maine.

At this 3-day workshop, students will learn through guided exercises and explore intuitive and experimental abstract painting, including collage, transfer, and monoprinting methods. Mixed media includes acrylic paints, graphite, pastels, crayons, markers, lightweight fabrics, personal papers scanned onto archival paper, and more. We approach this process with non-judgemental beginnings and dismiss our inner critic as we build a history of surface texture and color. We maintain non-attachment by working on more than one piece at a time and remain open to possibilities that cannot be planned ahead. There are no mistakes, there are no rules. We say “what if?”, try new things, improvise, think outside the lines, adjust and revise – forging our own path. Students can work on paper supports or wood panels, or try both. Demonstrations, individualized instruction, and group discussion included. Some materials provided, materials list provided upon registration. A $5 materials fee will be charged.

Workshop will run July 8-10, from 9:30 am-4:00 pm. This workshop needs 4 students t0 run.

About your instructor – Suzanne Siegel

Artist Bio:Suzanne Siegel

Suzanne takes long walks, most often in places near the sea. She makes drawings, takes notes, and searches for visual ideas that communicate arrangements of elements in space and luminous light that she feels deeply connected to. With a visual and sensual interest in rugged working harbors and ever changing tidal environments at the edge of the sea, Suzanne works in mixed media painting, watercolor, and mixed media collage. In her studio, she searches inventively with line, shape, color, texture, and value as she suggests the spirit of landscapes that she feels most connected to. She is currently represented by Carver Hill Gallery in Rockland, Maine, Cynthia Winings Gallery in Blue Hill, Maine, Cove Gallery in Wellfleet, MA, and Archipelago – The Island Institute in Rockland, Maine. She teaches workshops in Truro, MA, Nantucket, MA, Stowe, VT, and other New England locations, as well as in her Guilford studio. Suzanne is also available for local and distance art mentoring for individuals at any level.
Artist Statement:
My work is about curiosity. I begin in a state of searching and wondering, of not knowing. As a work progresses, I aim for a satisfying balance between spontaneity and intentionality, freedom and structure, chaos and rationality. I am inspired and feel the most alive in places where land meets sky and ocean. Walking near water is my muse, and I enjoy the sounds, smells, and visual excitement of rugged working harbors and the shallow waves at the edge of the ocean. I spend a long time looking, to find what moves me. I intently observe shapes, values, textures, and colors, along with the beauty of light and how it influences and constantly changes everything. In the studio, I begin by drawing random lines and shapes, and quickly erase or thinly veil most of my first marks, in order to keep myself curious and the work in flux as I build a history of layers. I aim to transport myself and the viewer into a moment of surprising and unknown beauty, as I work toward a strong, open arrangement of visual elements.
