About your instructor – Caroline Garrett Hardy
Caroline Garrett Hardy’s first artistic breakthrough was a drawing of a fox at the age of four. The fox wore a vest, a feathered cap, and held a basket of eggs. From that point on, Caroline knew art was her passion.
Hardy attended Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA for two years and transferred to Virginia Commonwealth University where she earned a BFA in painting and printmaking.
She traveled to San Francisco where she received a scholarship to the Academy of Art University to study illustration. There she continued her pursuit of drawing animals that did things like wear vests and a feathered cap. She received an honorary mention from the department and a certificate in Illustration. She then traveled to London, England where she lived for eight years.
She was visiting lecturer at Camberwell College of Art and Craft teaching illustration and 2-D design. She also studied book arts at Camberwell. Her stint as visiting lecturer to Camberwell stretched out over 18 years. She was elected to the Board of Lecturers for the London Institute of Art in 1992.
When she returned to the USA, she attended Cranbrook Academy of Art, receiving an MFA in printmaking. She received a grant from Ohio State University to study book arts at the Logan Elm Press where she was awarded another Masters of Arts degree.
She taught Illustration, 2-D design, and drawing at the Savannah College of Art and Design, until she returned to the Academy of Art University to teach graduate level drawing, illustration, and the History of American Illustration.
When she returned to the East Coast she co-created a Communication Arts program for Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, NC and then was hired by Christopher Newport University where she taught Photoshop and 2-D design.
