Watercolor with Chuck Paine

Watercolor has long been the chosen medium to represent the raw beauty and idyllic coast that is Maine. In this class, you will learn the basics of watercolor, with Chuck Paine, an accomplished instructor here at the Art Loft. Chuck is happy to share the process he has developed from traveling and painting in watercolor. In this class, you will learn a variety of watercolor techniques, dry brush, wet in wet, and color mixing.

This is a series class and runs for 3 weeks. Please note: If you have a “Class Pass” you can still drop in. Please register for the class so your instructor will know you are interested in attending. Your card will be punched for each class you take.

Artist Bio:Watercolor Class - Chuck Paine - The Art Loft

“I seek out those images that make life on the coast of Maine different from the cities that most of our visitors are forced to call home. If it’s old and crumbling and reminiscent of a way of life that is slipping away, I will try to capture it before it is gone.

I have no wish to be thought of as a “modern” artist. My goal is to paint in the “old ways.” It takes many years of repetition and study to learn to move a pen or brush swiftly and with confidence that the resulting mark will please the eye. And it takes many weeks to apply paint in the manner of the old masters, beginning with a “grisaille” and building multiple layers of “fat over lean” until the desired result is achieved. I choose to do this not because it is easy, but because it is hard—and so rare today as to have practically vanished”.

It pains me to observe the commercialism that has crept into the art milieu in the 21st century. Art should be about the artist’s struggle to transfer to canvas or paper a vision that exists in his mind’s eye and to improve that vision in stages by continual hard work so that at the end of his days he might be called a “master”. If one of his works is good enough, someone will understand its value and wish to own it. If not, it should be scraped down or burnt, and many of my unsuccessful works have suffered this fate at my hand.

I feel strongly that if one has achieved a measure of success as an artist, one is obliged to pass it on. For this reason, I offer frequent and inexpensive art lessons to aspiring artists in midcoast Maine.
